  14. announced  V-series ULTRA Smartmodem 14400, a high speed, high
  15. capability modem that implements the most advanced international and
  16. industry standards with CCITT V.32bis for 14.4 Kbps line speed and
  17. CCITT V.42bis for up to 38.4 Kbps throughput.

  19. ULTRA 144 delivers unique connectivity to SNA, X.25 and ISDN networks
  20. and supports virtually every modem communication application in
  21. mainframe, workstation and personal computer environments.  Customers
  22. using ULTRA 144 receive the maximum 50 percent throughput improvement
  23. over 9600 bps in synchronous environments or when transferring
  24. compressed data files.  ULTRA 144's X.25 PAD supports four
  25. simultaneous communication sessions to packet switched networks and
  26. provides transition to ISDN by connecting analog modems to digital
  27. ISDN systems through packet switched networks.

  29. "CCITT V.32 has been around for seven years, and it's just now
  30. replacing CCITT V.22bis, 2400 bps, as the business standard for high
  31. speed modems," said Hayes President Dennis C. Hayes.  "CCITT V.32bis is
  32. leading-edge technology.  ULTRA 144 is ideal for customers who always
  33. want to be the "first" with new technologies and whose applications
  34. require additional throughput."

  36. ULTRA 144 also features Hayes AutoSync for synchronous communications,
  37. MI/MIC for support of PABX and security systems, and CCITT V.25bis for
  38. synchronous autodialing.  The modem also provides backward
  39. compatibility with MNP 2-5, Hayes Adaptive Data Compression, and LAPB
  40. error-control to provide a migration path to CCITT V.42 and V.42bis.
  41. By supporting Express 96, ULTRA 144 communicates with V-series
  42. Smartmodem 9600s, the world's largest installed base of proprietary
  43. 9600 bps modems.

  45. ULTRA 144 will be available in North America in August 1991 for an
  46. estimated retail price of US$1199 and CN$1699.  For customers whose
  47. applications require the increased line speed of 14.4 Kbps, Hayes
  48. offers upgrades from ULTRA 96 to ULTRA 144 for US$275 and CN$330.  For
